Boydell’s: Where Wine and Heritage Meet

Boydell's Hunter Valley

It’s no secret that Morpeth has long been one of the Hunter’s most delightful destinations – where heritage streetscapes meet charming pubs and boutique hospitality. Tucked along Green Street, Boydell’s Cellar Door & Restaurant is the jewel in Morpeth’s crown, winning hearts with its soulful blend of history, wine and seasonal dining.

Step inside Boydell’s, and you’ll instantly feel transported. Housed in a lovingly restored historic slab hut, the space strikes a delicate balance between colonial character and refined modernity. Timber beams, corrugated iron and subtle fittings evoke old-world charm, while the layout flows beautifully from the cellar door to an intimate dining area. It’s the kind of place where the past is honoured without feeling like a museum. Daniel and Jane Maroulis have brought Boydell’s legacy full circle. Drawing on a winemaking story that began in 1826 along the Allyn River, they blend heritage with hands-on winemaking and community pride – infusing every glass with regional passion.

Boydell’s pours award-winning wines from Hunter Valley and other cool-climate NSW regions: expressive Verdelho, elegant Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Shiraz, Pinot Noir, Merlot and more. Guests can enjoy a hosted tasting of six select wines at the cellar door for only $10 per person – or relax in the wine bar with a cocktail, charcuterie or cheese board. Their all-day menu is a showcase of regional producers and seasonal flair. Whether you’re after snacks or a shared feast, the plates – like beef tartare, crisp octopus, rainbow trout or hearty steak frites – are made to complement Boydell’s wines perfectly. Weekly specials and the generous “Gathering” menu (a set multi-course share menu) bring fresh creativity each visit.

“Boydell’s isn’t just a place to eat or sip wine – it’s a story of heritage, hospitality, and heart, served up in every glass and plate.”

Boydell’s delivers relaxed, polished hospitality – warm, inviting, and effortlessly enjoyable. Whether gathered around the fireplace in winter or basking in the courtyard in spring, guests are encouraged to linger over food, wine and conversation. Boydell’s welcomes guests from Thursday to Sunday, with the cellar door open from 11 am to 5 pm and the wine bar open until 6:30 pm. The restaurant offers all-day dining from around 11 am on Thursday to Saturday, and until about 5 pm on Sundays. Bookings are recommended, particularly for dinner or larger groups, to ensure you secure your preferred time and enjoy a seamless experience.

A beloved fixture in Morpeth’s dining scene, Boydell’s consistently receives glowing feedback from both locals and visitors. Guests praise its warm hospitality, beautifully presented dishes, and wines that perfectly capture the essence of the Hunter Valley. Regularly recognised as one of the area’s standout dining experiences, it has built a loyal following and a reputation for excellence.

Morpeth’s historic charm has long drawn visitors – and Boydell’s only deepens that sense of place. With a menu rooted in community, wines that tell a story, and hospitality that makes you feel like a friend returning home, it’s a stop you don’t just make – you savour.
